Get ready to shake, shimmy, and gyrate to
the beat of surdos, cuicas, and chocalhos! If you are interested in experiencing
Brazil’s sensuous and intoxicating music and dance
scene, Students Helping Street Kids International (SHSKI)
will hold its third annual Carnaval Brasil! on Saturday,
February 5th, in Gerlinger Hall Gym 1468 University Street,
on the campus of the University of Oregon from 7:00pm until
midnight. This authentic carnaval event is a fundraiser
for SHSKI, a Eugene-based, non-profit organization that brings
global education and community service together in an academic
program for street kids in Brazil and Tanzania. Tickets
are $ 6 advance/$8 at the door for high school and university
students, $ 8 advance/$10 at the door for community members,

The Carnaval is a gathering for people who love to dance,
have fun, and celebrate the richness of lively Brazilian
rhythms – samba, bossa nova, maracatu, samba reggae,
Brazilian hip hop, forro, frevo, and more! The event
begins with a half hour of dance lessons at 7:00 pm., followed
by the program, which includes:
- A capoeira demonstration (unique Afro-Brazilian mixture
of martial arts, dance, music, and gymnastics.
- Musical performances by the local Brazilian groups Edson
Oliveira’s Sun Bossa quintet, featuring samba and
bossa nova and Macaco Velho performing popular
Brazilian music.
- Brazilian dance performances.
- Costumes, masks, and Gigantic human puppets (The Illuminated
Fools).
The star of this unique carnival event is two-time Eugene
Celebration Parade winner Samba Ja, Eugene’s own 45-member
Eugene Brazilian percussion band that specializes in playing
wild, funky, infectious, and incredibly danceable street
music from all over Brazil.

A
little bit about SHSKI: With the idea of creating a non-profit
organization which brings global education and community
service
together, Bob Crites, a former Peace Corps worker to Brazil,
founded SHSKI in 1997. American students, elementary through
university level, and individuals, "adopt" a Brazilian
or Tanzanian (through the Jane Goodall Institute) child,
saving
these kids from the tragedies of drugs, crime, poverty, abuse
and indifference. Students in the U.S have fundraisers in
their schools to provide scholarships for their "adopted" children
which enable them to attend school in their own communities.
The sponsoring students and individuals follow their child's
progress through high school. What's so great about this
program
is how it impacts our own kids in the U.S. Helping a specific
child who lives in a world so different from our own fosters
cross-cultural exchange, social awareness, and community
service.
It also fosters a sense of altruism and kindness. And of
course these children in Brazil and Tanzania are the recipients
of
an incredible educational opportunity which has a very positive
impact on their lives. We work with contacts in these countries
who choose individual children who, despite horrific living
conditions, demonstrate strong characteristics of intelligence,
self-discipline, and the desire to learn and succeed. back
